High Flyers，低級英文

香港科技大學的 Business School 宣布在八月至十月開辦一個 Consortium Program for High Flyers. 這便等同北京清華大學商管系搞一個專為「土豪」而設的高級課程。平心而論，這種課程，誰不想有份？誰不想做 Donald Trump? 或者用一個本土例子，誰不想做 「張震遠」。(1)

Ops! 講錯了！今日誰要做這個張某？而這就正正是 high flyer 的問題。很吸引，但沒有人願意公開對號入座。也許你心㡳裡希望有記者給你作個專訪，形容你為 high flyer。這樣，你便可以一笑置之，不置可否。在英語世界，這就代表了 high flyer 的奇妙意義。科大要培訓 high flyer，但似乎對這英詞毫無認識。知道有這詞彙，甚為嚮往，然而對 high flyer 的英語文化處境毫無感覺。很難想象這就是自詡培訓商界精英在國際運作傳訊的英語水平。

細看這課程的英文，就看第一句，也是最重要的一句。The program develops high flyers in meeting the challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing and increasingly competitive business environment and provides golden opportunities for networking with executives from diversified industries and background.

The program develops high flyers…. 這是百分百的港式英文。在似樣的英文，You don’t develop people. You train people to develop themselves. You educate your people to develop useful skills. You develop strategies. You develop a small company into a multinational corporation…在英語世界，You just don’t develop people, 更不用說 develop high flyers 了。

長達四行的英句，充塞着空洞的行貨 – challenges, opportunities, rapid changes, increasingly competitive. 香港中學生英文科的雞精詞彙，說了等於不説。課程自稱可以 provide golden opportunities。golden，庸俗不堪，是街頭賣小販嘩嘩啦啦的口吻. 像「擺錢入你袋」，不配這個 EMBA 世界第一，MBA 亞洲第一的身份。唯一有意義的實質賣點是 networking，但英文仍然出錯。Networking with executives from diversified industries and background。在這裏，diversified industries 是錯了，應當是 diverse industries。是與「不同行業」的行政人員 network，不是「多元化的行業」。
