Develops students’ understanding

早一回論到香港城市大學的 BA （Hons）English for International Corporate Communication的港式英語，意猶未盡。短短的兩句英語課程簡介，提供了豐富的反面教材，不想浪費，希望讀者不介意。

上回批評 This programme nurtures students to communicate effectively in English….. 可以想像，寫這句英語的時候，原作者腦海中大致想的是中文：「這課程栽培學員有效地以英語溝通」。於是便找出對等的英文字彙，按著中文句子結構，把空間填上。結果便是 Chinglish。學者稱之為，用英文字來寫中文。雖然如此，香港的中學高中生若交出這水平的語文功課，肯定合格，因為 the programme nurtures students to communicate 雖然十分 chinglish，但跟足文法規矩。相信大學生也可以過關。但這些水平要在中六公開試拿個 5星級，或在 IELTS 取得高分，恐怕還未夠級數。更不用在 international corporate 公開場合運作。

上述是第一句，第二句也同樣港式。The programme 「also develops students’ understanding in their chosen specialization – Marketing，Public Relations or Translation and Interpreting.」 這英句的港式成分在 develops students’ understanding.

在英語世界，你只能 develop 自己的 something。I develop an understanding of marketing。I develop a certain skill。你不能為別人 develop 他的 understanding or skill。你的課程不能 develop students’ understanding。在英語世界，可以的是這樣：This programme develops an indepth understanding of marketing IN students。「AMONG students」也可以。加個 indepth，因為若只是 students’ understanding，沒有意思，實在不知道你想説什麼。當然，若要誠實，一個小小 BA （Hons）當然談不上 indepth，那麼 working understanding 也不錯，也未必沒有吸引。這就是在國際專業及企業公開場合拿得出來見得人的英語。不是高深，不是典雅。只是簡簡單單，清晰明確，沒有多餘字句的有效溝通的英文。

Nurture，develop 是香港人的喜愛，不單在這城市的大學圈子，也是吳克儉的教育局的心儀英字；也是構建 chinglish 的常用材料。我這一欄不憂缺乏題材。■
